Architecture

Architecture is the art and science of spatial relationships, the term we use for how spaces and objects are organized. Like music is about the sounds made by instruments, rather than the instruments themselves. It is the space between the walls and the floors that have our interest rather than the walls and floors as objects.  

When take our time we can feel whether or not a space is comfortable, we perceive it through our different senses.

Comfortable is a combination of stimuli that have to be just right; it relates to light, reflections and shadow, sound absorbing and sound reflecting properties, temperature, radiant heat, and ventilation, colors, our perception of beauty, and materials tangible qualities it all needs to fit together.

Entrance

 

Beyond satisfying our senses architecture must be shaped to fit a purpose. It is the purpose that defines the architecture and allow us to evaluate it. Not only must it be functional, its value also rely on practicalities, how it’s done and costs. 

Architecture is always situated in a context, a landscape natural or manmade. It is part of something bigger, and must respect that and somehow fit into that context.

We are all architects, we organize stuff around us, get ideas, and decorate our environments.

What sets the professional architect apart is the work method. We have a holistic approach to a project, where we consider details, and entireties, make analyses of possibilities and limits to determine where and how to best start the design process.

Later on when a concept have materialized, our work thereafter is mostly systematical trial and error to get everything to fit together, so details and entirety fit and joins in a coherent way.

Design Tools

BIM (Building Information Management) software is the successor of CAD software (Computer Aided Design). It is basically a digital database of programable types of building materials and building elements with extensive graphical display options.

We don’t draw drawings per se but build virtual models of building projects.

The model is made out of virtual representations of physical structures such as; columns, beams, walls, faucets, electrical power outlets, etc., and mime how a physical structure would be constructed in reality.

It’s easier to understand complex structures presented as 3D models rather than as a series of two-dimensional drawings. Everybody benefits from working this way. We see unusual few mistakes on our construction sites. 

You can download an application, a 3D viewer that allows you to analyze the digital model in detail on your own computer.

The advantage of using BIM compared to CAD is particularly compelling when it comes to revisions of drawings. CAD software is prone to mistakes when a series of individual drawings have to be manually revised.

Architect

To design a building we need information about the building site; location, the dimensions and the orientation of the land.

On Koh Samui many plots of land are on hillsides and to determine contours and special features in the landscape a topographical survey is needed.

We need a building program, a simple list of the rooms you want and an overall approximately size of the building. Naturally a visit to the site will follow to understand the context.

With this information, we can analyze by sketching, how to best utilize the land for any given purpose.

We begin with a preliminary design, and work with the big picture, the shape of the 
building, how space is allocated for the different functions, what it can become?
